Intervention Programs
Academic Intervention Programs at McKinley Elementary
At McKinley Elementary, we are committed to meeting the diverse academic needs of our students. We offer a variety of intervention programs that are carefully tailored to support different learning modalities. These programs take place both during the school day and after school, providing reinforcement and targeted instruction for students who need additional support.
Students are identified for intervention through universal screeners, diagnostic assessments, and standardized state testing such as the CAASPP. Once identified, students are placed in programs designed to build foundational skills and close academic gaps.
Areas of Intervention:
-
English Language Arts (ELA)
-
Spanish Language Arts (SLA)
-
Mathematics
-
English Language Development (ELD)
-

After-school reading intervention

Reading Intervention
Our Reading Intervention Team proudly supports over 100 students in building essential reading skills. We use the Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program, a research-based approach proven to help struggling readers improve fluency, comprehension, and decoding. Many of our students successfully exit the program with grade-level reading proficiency. We are excited to continue this impactful work throughout the school year.
Math Intervention
Our math intervention program uses Number Worlds, the intervention component of our My Math curriculum. This engaging, teacher-led program aligns with Common Core State Standards and is designed to support students identified through math screeners and diagnostics.
Key program features:
-
Small group pull-out instruction (approx. 6 students)
-
Daily 30-minute sessions
-
Focus on foundational math skills and higher-order thinking
-
Use of manipulatives, online resources (Building Blocks), and student workbooks
-
Targets students in Response to Intervention (RTI) tiers 2 and 3
After-School Interventions
In addition to in-school supports, McKinley offers robust after-school intervention programs in English Language Arts and math. These sessions run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and are completely free of charge. A snack is provided daily.
These are not traditional homework help sessions. Instead, students engage in computer-adaptive, web-based programs that focus on reinforcing foundational skills and improving academic confidence.
